Qantas plane makes emergency landing after cabin fills with smoke

A Qantas plane has made an emergency landing returning to Auckland airport after smoke poured out of a faulty oven.

The Boeing 737 on Qantas flight 144 departed Auckland at 1.19pm on Thursday and was heading to Sydney, but was forced to turn around.

Emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, were sent to meet the plane on its return to the airport.

Qantas confirmed the smoke was from a malfunctioning oven and the plane landed safely.

“The aircraft landed safely and without incident. As is standard airport procedure
emergency vehicles escorted the aircraft to the terminal,” a Qantas spokesperson said.

“Engineers have inspected the aircraft and identified a fault with one of the ovens in
the forward galley.

“We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding and we aim to
have them on their way to Sydney as soon as possible.”
