Qantas flight diverted to Melbourne after mid-air issue

A Qantas flight bound for Sydney was forced to divert to Melbourne.

Flight QF568 had taken off from Perth and was bound for Sydney when staff flagged an issue with air-conditioning on the A333 in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The decision was made to divert to Tullamarine.

A Qantas spokesperson told Yahoo7 it was not an emergency landing but rather a "priority handling situation".

"The air-conditioning system has the ability to affect the pressure in the cabin," the spokesperson said.

"Following standard procedure, the crew descended to 10,000 feet and were able to restart the system and diverted to Melbourne."

"The crew did not declare an emergency. It was a request for priority handling by air traffic control on arrival into Melbourne as a precaution."

The spokesperson said the aircraft landed "normally in Melbourne" and customers are being transferred to the first available services to Sydney.

When there is an issue with cabin pressurisation, it is standard procedure to descend to 10,000 feet where pressurisation is no longer required.

If there is a pressurisation issue, oxygen masks are deployed.

The aircraft was operated by an Airbus A330 aircraft, which carries up to 297 passengers.

Engineers will be inspecting the aircraft in Melbourne.
