Second-seeded Garbine Muguruza has cruised to victory over Ann Li at the WTA Tour's Chicago Fall Tennis Classic to advance to the last 16.

Spaniard Muguruza , playing for the first time since a fourth-round exit at the US Open, opened her campaign with a 6-4 6-4 win against her American opponent.

In other action, sixth-seeded Ons Jabeur romped to a 6-1 6-0 success over Hsieh Su-wei in just 46 minutes.

Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens was stunned 6-2 6-1 by Tamara Zidansek while former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka won by the same scoreline against Zhang Shuai.

Anett Kontaveit, the champion in Ostrava last week, kept her winning run going despite the quick change of continent, defeating Madison Brengle 6-4 6-3.

There were also wins for seventh-seeded Elise Mertens, Jil Teichmann and young American Amanda Anisimova.

Kazakh top seed Yulia Putintseva led the way at the Astana Open.

The 26-year-old comfortably defeated Ekaterine Gorgodze 6-1 6-2 in the first round, while French third seed Kristina Mladenovic was given a real battle by Kazakh wild card Anna Danilina, eventually prevailing 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4.

The only one of the six seeded players in action to lose was Greet Minnen, of Belgium, beaten 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 by Slovenia's Kaja Juvan.
