Puppy left with fractured ribs after owner caught beating her

WARNING – DISTRESSING CONTENT: A puppy has been rescued from a Perth home after police uncovered CCTV footage of the owner abusing the dog.

WA police discovered the vision while carrying out a Misuse of Drugs Act search warrant at an Aubin Grove address in August last year.

The footage was found on a seized CCTV hard drive and showed a 29-year-old man carrying the then three-month-old rottweiler puppy, named Sasha, by the neck and midsection at his waist height.

As he roughly carries the dog to the front of a parked car he can be seen kneeing Sasha in her ribs three times with such force he broke her rib.

“Sasha could not escape the kneeing and would have suffered fear as well as pain from her fractured rib, and the haphazard way in which she was being carried," RSPCA WA Executive Manager Animal and Enforcement Operations, Hannah Dreaver said in a statement.

WA police filed an animal cruelty report after viewing the footage filmed in April 2020 and an RSPCA investigator attended the man's home to seize Sasha.

The offender, who has since pled guilty to animal cruelty, admitted to the inspector to slapping Sasha a couple of times for chasing people, but denied beating her.

When the inspector told the man they had footage of him kneeing Sasha three times, he said he didn’t remember the incident.

“Our animals rely on us totally and love us unconditionally and it is absolutely not OK to treat them like this,” Ms Dreaver said.

Sasha remains at the RSPCA’s Animal Care Centre.

Her owner was fined a total of $2500 and ordered to pay court costs, care and treatment costs for Sasha.

He has also been prohibited from owning or being in contact with a dog for three years.

RSPCA WA relies on the community to report incidents of suspected cruelty and neglect. Report cruelty 24/7 on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) or at online.
