Prue Leith has revealed she told The Masked Singer bosses that she didn't want to look "ugly" in her costume.

The Great British Bake Off judge was a contestant on the latest series of the ITV show, which sees celebs singing while hidden inside huge, colourful outfits. Leith performed inside a stunning Pegasus costume, with her identity uncovered this week in front of judges Maya Jama, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan.

Discussing her stint on stage on The One Show, Leith admitted she had been picky about what she was going to dress up as.

The cook was on the sofa on Monday, 6 January and told hosts Alex Jones and Lauren Laverne: "I just didn't want to look... I really did not want to look ugly. I didn't want to be Teeth or Spag Bol or an Egg."

"That’s absolutely fine," she continued. "I don't know, I wanted to look elegant. I thought, well I can't sing but at least I can look good. So I said, 'Could I have a dress with a waist, you know, nice elegant dress.' And they said, 'Yes it will just have a horse’s head.'

"And then I loved it. And it had this sort of breastplate, it was all beautiful. I really loved the costume. The wings were... quite difficult to get down onto the stage!"

Leith also admitted that before she went on The Masked Singer, she didn't have any vocal skills at all.

"I have never been able to sing," said the star, who gave a rendition of Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin' on stage.

"I have never been able to get any noise out of my throat if I am singing. And so when they asked me I said, 'I can't sing, I am tone deaf' and they said, 'We can teach you.'

"And I thought, you know, this is my big chance. If I set a goal, like, I have got to get onto the show. And I really tried, so I had a lot of singing lessons. And you know what? You can learn to sing!"

She went on: "So I am now on a mission. Anybody who says, 'I can not sing', forget it. You can, you just have to work at it."

The One Show airs at 7pm on BBC One on weekdays.

The Masked Singer is on Saturdays at 7pm on ITV1, ITVX & STV.
