Private school students allegedly 'tortured and killed' native Australian animal

The senior students of the Sydney school are now under police investigation.

Senior students at one of Australia's most prestigious high schools are under investigation by police after the "torture and killing of a goanna".

The incident occurred at an annual cadet camp arranged for The King's School students last month, with staff notifying police and the defence force after learning of the situation.

The King's School, located in Sydney's west, is renowned for offering a high standard of education and "character development" for boys since 1831, with tuition costing as much as $40,000 per year.

Prestigious high school responds to goanna killing

2GB radio host Bed Fordham on Friday shared he had received an "anonymous tip-off" from a listener about the goanna being tortured and killed, announcing on-air the school had admitted the regrettable turn of events once approached.

"There was an incident which occurred at The King’s School annual cadet camp towards the end of last term. We can confirm that a goanna was killed by senior students," the school said.

"We do not condone the behaviour of these students. It is inconsistent with the values and expectations of behaviour at King's," they continued.

It is unclear whether the school will enforce disciplinary action on the student's responsible, or whether this will be exclusively determined by police.

NSW Police told Yahoo News Australia they have begun an investigation into the matter.

"Officers from The Hills Police Area Command have commenced an investigation following the killing of a goanna at Singleton."

"Police have been told the reptile was allegedly killed on the afternoon of Wednesday 29 March, 2023 at a school camp."

Yahoo News Australia has reached out to The King's School for further comment.
