Princess Mary dragged into Danish royal drama: 'Complicated'

Crown Princess Mary has been dragged into the Danish royal drama after Queen Margrethe stripped her youngest son Prince Joachim's children of their royal titles.

It was announced last week that Joachim's children Prince Nikolai, 23, Prince Felix, 20, Prince Henrik, 13, and Princess Athena, 10, will no longer go by Prince or Princess, or His or Her Royal Highness. They will instead be known as either His Excellency Count of Monpezat or Her Excellency Countess of Monpezat from January 1, 2023.

The change does not affect Crown Prince Frederik and Mary's children Prince Christian, 16, Princess Isabella, 15, and 11-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

Queen Margrethe's reasoning was reportedly to allow her grandchildren to "shape their own lives without being limited by the special considerations and duties" that comes with being part of the Danish royal family.

Prince Joachim slammed the decision, saying it had "harmed" his children and that he found out from an aide, not his mother.

Now, he and his second wife Marie have revealed their relationship with Frederik and Mary is "complicated".

In an interview with B.T. the couple shared that Margrethe has "unfortunately not" spoken to them since the decision was made public.

"It’s also family. Or whatever we want to call it," Joachim said, with Marie sharing that their daughter Athena was being bullied in school because of the bombshell move.

"They come and say (to Athena): 'Is it you who is no longer a princess?'" she said.

Last week, Mary defended Margrethe's "difficult" decision, telling Ekstra Bladet, "Change can be extremely difficult and can really hurt."

"I think most people have tried it. But this does not mean that the decision is not the right one," she continued. "And I can understand that it is a very difficult decision to have to make, and also a very difficult decision to receive."

She then shared that while her children Prince Christian, 16, Princess Isabella, 15, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, 11, are unaffected by the decision as they are descendants of the future King, this may not always be the case.

"We will also look at our children’s titles when the time comes," she said. "Today we cannot see what the royal house will look like when it is Christian’s time, or when Christian’s time begins to approach."
