Princess Mary dazzles in new 50th birthday portraits: 'Stunning'

Princess Mary has dazzled in a series of stunning new portrait photos to mark her milestone 50th birthday which takes place on February 5.

The Aussie-born royal — who posed with her husband, Prince Frederik — was every inch the future queen in a sparkling blue long-sleeved gown encrusted with gems and pink pearls.

The custom-made frock by Copenhagen designer Lasse Spangenberg also featured a sheer neckline and a full, floor-length skirt.

The Danish crown princess paired her outfit with a jaw-dropping tiara studded with diamonds and rubies along with a pair of matching earrings and a brooch that was pinned to her light blue sash.

Also attached to the top of Mary's sash was a cameo of her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, and at her hip dangled a white elephant to represent Denmark's oldest and most distinguished royal order of chivalry.

Prince Frederik, 53, appeared in full military regalia which included a sword, feathered cap and various medals.

The couple posed both together and separately for the snaps which were taken by photographer Hasse Nielsen in their home at Frederik VIII's Palace, Amalienborg.

Fans of the princess flooded the comments section on an Instagram post by the royal family with praise and well-wishes.

"Stunning. Such an impressive role model," one gushed.

"Beautiful portraits. What a wonderful couple," another added.

"Proud that they represent Denmark. Congratulations to Mary," wrote a third.

Celebrating a princess

Princess Mary's birthday will be marked by a week of events such as the opening of an 'Australian Garden' at the Copenhagen Zoo's new Australian animals enclosure and the opening of the 'Crown Princess Mary Center' at the University of Copenhagen.

Over the weekend, Mary and Frederik attended a new exhibition, 'Mary and the Crown Princesses' which paints a portrait of the princess and her four predecessors who eventually became queens of Denmark.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, both the gala dinner at Rosenborg Castle and the Mary Foundation's birthday celebration have been cancelled.

Mary has also been honoured with a book, Mary – H.K.H, which boasts 'new and unprecedented photos' of the royal as well as exclusive insight into Her Royal Highness' professional and private lives.

The mum-of-four has penned a personal message for each chapter of the tome which covers the major events of the past two decades since she met and fell in love with a Danish prince in a Sydney bar in 2000.
