Prince William Went to a Soccer Game and the Crowd Chanted “If You Hate the Royal Family, Clap Your Hands”
Thing you might not know: Prince William is a huge fan of Aston Villa, an English soccer club (sorry, sorry, "football" club)—to the point where he's been attending regular games between royal duties. Like, here he is on January 21, living his best and most sporty/posh life:
It's a whole thing. Anyway, William went to a Aston Villa vs. Celtics game on January 29, and was greeted by non-stop anti-monarchy chants and banners. According to The Telegraph, chants included “Lizzie’s in a box” (yikes), and the cheerful “If you hate the Royal family, clap your hands.” Celtics fans also had a banner reading “Michael Fagan The Prowler,” a reference to the Buckingham Palace intruder found in Queen Elizabeth's bedroom in 1982.
Annnnywho, Aston Villa ended up winning the game 4-3, and Prince William was seen celebrating:
Meanwhile, The Telegraph reports that "the visitors appear certain to face punishment" for all the banners and chanting, noting that the Shamrock Rovers were fined £8,540 last week when their fans also chanted “Lizzie’s in a Box.”
Prince William hasn't spoken out about the chants or banners at these games, but anti-monarchy sentiment isn't exactly new (people have been less-than-thrilled over the concept of royal families for...centuries!), so chances are he's used to it.
