Powerball's near misses – those that almost won the $80m jackpot

Spare a thought for the 169 people who were just one number off winning a share of $80 million in last week’s Powerball.

There was no first division winner last week resulting in a $100 million jackpot for tomorrow night’s draw, the equal largest prize in Australian Powerball history.

Bidding for last week’s $80 million jackpot, 15 entries had the required seven numbers but not the Powerball, earning them the division two prize of $81, 533.30.

Another 154 entries had the Powerball but missed one of the seven other numbers. They won the $4,853.15 third division prize.

“Imagine getting all of the seven winning numbers from the main barrel, but missing out on the jackpot because you didn’t have that Powerball number,” the Lott spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said.

While all 15 winners of division two beat the odds of more than seven million to one. They could have possibly won a share in the $80 million first division prize if they had bought a Power Hit entry, where choosing the Powerball is not required. That advantage however comes at a cost of $27 per game.
