Two rescuers drown trying to save man after he waded into river
Two rescuers have drowned after their boat flipped trying to help a tourist who landed in trouble after wading into waters off Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.
The swimmer, believed to be a 30-year-old tourist, was wading at the mouth of the Sherbrook River when he got into difficulty about 10.40am Sunday.
A boat deployed to assist the man flipped in the surf and threw the three rescuers into the water.
One of the rescuers and the tourist were winched from the water by an emergency helicopter.
The male rescuer, a man in his 50s, was flown to Melbourne’s The Alfred Hospital in a serious condition with back and leg injuries.
The tourist was taken to Warrnambool hospital by road ambulance in a stable condition.
