Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. JD Vance took the stage for the 2024 vice presidential debate
Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz and Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance went head-to-head Tuesday night in their first — and likely only — debate before Election Day next month.
The vice presidential debate, hosted by CBS News and moderated by Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan, kicked off at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City at 9 p.m. ET.
Who do you think won the vice presidential debate between Vance and Walz?
The event was broadcast on CBS and livestreamed on all platforms where CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+ are available. CBS planned simulcasts of the debate across various channels.

The 9 p.m. ET debate, which didn’t include a studio audience, lasted over 90 minutes. Both candidates were given a pen, pad of paper and water bottle — with no props nor prepared notes allowed on stage.
Some other rules: Walz and Vance each had two minutes to answer a question, and then got one minute each for a rebuttal. They may get another minute to discuss "at the discretion of the moderators." Neither candidate’s microphone was planned to be muted when the other was speaking, but CBS said it “reserves the right to turn off candidate microphones.”
Each candidate got two minutes to deliver a closing statement. Vance won a virtual coin toss on Sept. 26 and chose to deliver his statement second.
