A former Maldivian state minister has been arrested on the outskirts of Sri Lanka's capital for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl who had been sold via a website, police say.

Mohamed Ashmalee, who once served as the Maldives' minister of state for finance, was brought to court and then remanded into custody until July 16.

Sri Lankan police said Ashmalee, along with at least 33 others, have sexually abused the child over the past three months after she was purchased via a website, a racket which is now under investigations.

The mother of the child who allegedly allowed her daughter to be exploited was among the 32 people arrested so far.

The owner of the website that allegedly traded the child, as well as a local politician, were also arrested.
