Policeman who lost both legs walks at daughter's graduation

A Florida police officer who lost both his legs in a horrific motorbike accident last year has managed to walk during his daughter’s university graduation.

Miami-Dade Police Major Ricky Carter was in a serious accident off-duty in May 2017, which cost him both his legs, WSB-TV 2 Atlanta reports.

Mr Carter said he woke up after the accident, saw his broken arms before lifting the cover up and finding his legs were gone. He admitted he didn’t know how difficult the journey ahead was going to be.

The father said he made a promise to his daughter Jennifer – that he would walk at her graduation.

A GoFundMe page raised more than US$86,000 so the police officer’s home could accommodate his injuries and for him to get prosthetic legs, which he recently received.

On Thursday, almost a year on from the crash which changed his life, Mr Carter was there for his daughter’s graduation.

Jennifer said after her father’s accident she didn’t think he would be there.

“To see him stand again felt like old times,” she said.

“It was the best feeling ever.”

The father said he needed to show his daughter that “life has no limitations”.

“She propelled me to get to what I achieved today,” he said.
