Police shoot man, woman at Melbourne club after gun pulled on cops

A man who pulled a handgun at a Melbourne nightclub has been shot and injured by police, with a woman also sustaining a gunshot wound.

Police have shot and wounded a man and a woman after a handgun was pulled on officers at a Melbourne nightclub.

Police responded shortly after 3am to a report that a man armed with a firearm was in an upstairs room of the King Street club.

In a statement police said members of the Critical Incident Response Team attended to speak to the man who pulled out a handgun.

"Police fired at the man, hitting him in the torso. He was taken to hospital under police guard," the statement said.

A woman also sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives will investigate the shooting with oversight by Professional Standards Command as is usual when there has been a police shooting.
