Police seize $100,000 in drugs headed to Gold Coast ahead of schoolies

Police have seized more than $100,000 in drugs heading for the Gold Coast ahead of this year’s Schoolies celebrations.

Queensland Police Minister Mark Ryan says officers have been working hard to catch drug runners in the lead up to the end-of-school festivities.

A five-month operation resulted in the seizure of packaged ice, cocaine, MDMA, LSD, cannabis and other drugs. Firearms were also seized.

Jon Wacker, from the Drug and Serious Crime Group, says the operation targeted online platforms, including on the dark web, that are used to sell drugs.

“We believe some of those drugs would have made their way into the schoolies environment,” Detective Superintendent Wacker told reporters on Wednesday.

Overt and covert police operations will continue, including on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast which is increasingly popular as a schoolies destination.
