A senior police prosecutor has been bashed on a busy Brisbane CBD street after he came to the aid of a barrister who was being harassed.

A man was acting aggressively towards the barrister Gerry Elmore on George St when the sergeant Josh Kelly stepped in to calm the situation, police say.

The man then turned his attention to Mr Kelly, throwing several punches that struck the sergeant to the head.

Good Samaritans came to Mr Kelly's aid and the man was arrested.

The sergeant and a 47-year-old man were taken to hospital for treatment while Mr Elmore was not physically injured.

A 24-year-old Gailes man has been charged with serious assault of a police officer causing bodily harm, serious assault of a police officer and commit public nuisance.

He was denied police bail and is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
