Police officer's unexpected act for man driving without valid licence

An unexpected turn of events unfolded after a young man was caught driving without a valid driver's licence and expired plates on his way to a job interview.

The driver, Ka'Shawn Baldwin, told Officer Roger Gemoules he was driving without a proper licence because he had no other way of getting to the interview.

"I thought it was over," Mr Baldwin told CNN.

Officer Gemoules, a policeman in the Illinois village of Cahokia, did not issue the driver with a ticket or made moves to tow the car, but he could not let Mr Baldwin drive without a licence either.

"He was very respectful when I pulled him over and you could just tell — I could feel that he really was wanting to get to this job interview," Officer Gemoules said.

The officer followed Mr Baldwin as he dropped off the car at a safe place and then drove him to the interview himself.

The driver was a few minutes late to the interview, but ended up getting the job.

Mr Baldwin plans to earn enough to get his licence back and promised to take the bus in the future.

Francella Jackson, the assistant to Cahokia Mayor Curtis McCall Jr, shared a picture of the police officer on Facebook on Thursday, praising his good deed.

"On behalf of Mayor Curtis McCall Jr, I would like to thank Officer Gemoules for showing compassion and being a great example of how community-oriented policing actually works," she wrote.

The post has been flooded with support from citizens commending the cop for his actions.
