'We needed her': Police officer delivers baby at roadside on way to work

A Victorian Police officer has rushed to the aide of a pregnant woman and helped her give birth by the side of a road.

Whittlesea Police Station First Constable Alana Olivieri was on her way to work on Saturday when she noticed a car abruptly pull over on Yan Yean Road in Doreen in Melbourne’s northeast about 5.30pm.

“I did see Kyle (Sherwood) spring around to the passenger side,” Constable Olivieri said.

“And that’s when I thought ‘I’d better get involved here’.”

Constable Olivieri parked behind the Sherwoods’ car. She initially thought a child might be choking but soon realised Mr Sherwood’s partner Melissa was in labour.

“I think my first comment was, ‘I’m a police officer but I don’t think I can help very much’,” the police officer said.

“Then I proceeded to find hot water and rags but all I had was a really nice jumper and we went from there.

“Melissa really did all the work and Kyle was awesome.”

Ms Sherwood told Nine News “we definitely needed Alana”.

“So many hands are really needed when you’re trying to give birth.

“She was a calming influence as well for Kyle.”

The police officer was praised on Facebook with many relieved the baby was OK.

“That’s so sweet and beautiful,” one woman wrote.

Another added that it was “such a gorgeous story”.

“Fantastic job, officer,” one man wrote.

Little Charles Arthur Sherwood was born happy and healthy. He’s now back home with his parents.
