Shocking footage has captured the moment a police officer of nearly 25 years entered a child’s bedroom during a home viewing and sniffed her dirty underwear.
David Timothy Moon, 50, was viewing a home for sale in Phoenix, US, in May last year when he ventured into a three-year-old girl’s bedroom and rummaged through her laundry basket, ABC15 reported.
In surveillance video, he can be seen pulling out a pair of knickers and smelling them.
When he turns around, he spots the camera and can be heard saying: “God damn it.”
The camera’s motion sensor alerted the homeowner who contacted police over the incident.
On learning of the accusations facing Moon, he was dismissed from his role as Deputy US Marshal.
Moon’s girlfriend said he had thrown away his laptop after learning authorities were seeking his arrest, according to a police report obtained by ABC15.
His email account allegedly contained a video of girls doing gymnastics. The email had been sent to the account by himself.
Moon was charged with two counts of felony trespassing with sexual motivation, and faced court last week after later pleading guilty to misdemeanour trespassing following a plea deal.
“This is by far the stupidest thing I've ever done in my life," Moon said in court.
Despite pleas from the prosecution for a tougher sentence, he was given unsupervised probation.
"The court believes that he is sincere in his remorse," Judge Katherine Cooper said, noting his lack of prior crimes, his military service and work as a deputy marshal.
The father of the young girl told the court he has stepped up home security over fears Moon may return to the property.
