Eight Cameroon athletes reported missing from Commonwealth Games athletes' village

Team officials have confirmed that eight Cameroonian athletes have gone missing from their accommodation at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

Six men and two women, which is one-third of the 24 athletes Cameroon sent to the Gold Coat Games, had gone missing, Team Cameroon chef de mission Victor Agbor Nso said in a statement on Wednesday. Three of them are weightlifters and five are boxers.

"The authorities are very disappointed with the deserters - some did not even compete," Mr Molombe said.

Before the start of the Commonwealth Games, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton warned athletes would be monitored to ensure they did not go on the run or outstay visas.

The Commonwealth Games Federation said it would monitor the situation but athletes had "the right to travel freely" on their visas.

In 2012, seven Cameroonian athletes disappeared while in London for the Olympics.
