Police jump into the surf to rescue flailing kangaroo

A confused kangaroo has given police in Victoria the runaround thanks to its bizarre attraction to the ocean.

Police in Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula were called to Safety Beach on Saturday afternoon after a kangaroo was spotted frolicking in the surf.

The kangaroo had made it back to the beach upon their arrival and had been covered in a blanket by a member of the public.

Yet as police were monitored the marsupial’s wellbeing, it made the impulse decision to hop off and dive back into the water.

It began to swim but got into difficulty in the swell. As breaking waves crashed over the roo, it became submerged under the water.

Dramatic footage captured the moment a Sergeant and a Senior Sergeant noticed the animal in distress and then jumped into the water.

They managed to carry the kangaroo, which was unconscious, to a grassed area where they successfully resuscitated it.

The roo was wrapped in blankets and taken to Rosebud Police Station where it was assessed by a local Wildlife Centre.

The kangaroo is said to be recovering well despite inhaling a considerable amount of saltwater.

While this roo had no hesitation when jumping into the swell, an adorable dog in New Zealand has other ideas when he heads to the beach with his surfing owner.
