'Disgusting vandalism': Dozens of gravestones destroyed in 'sick' 15-minute rampage

An investigation is underway to find those responsible for damaging more than 30 gravestones in a NSW cemetery.

In all, 36 gravestones were damaged in Sedgefield Cemetery, near Singleton northwest of Newcastle on May 31.

Police have been told the damage occurred between 7pm and 7.15pm.

Hunter Valley Police District Commander Superintendent Chad Gillies said in a statement police are seeking answers for those who have family members buried in the cemetery.

“They have already experienced immeasurable grief, and this sort of incident stirs up those emotions all over again,” he said.

“Someone knows something, and we urge anyone with any information to speak up.”

On Facebook, people were disgusted by the damage.

“What does motivate people to do such sick actions?” one woman wrote.

Another called it “disgusting vandalism”.

Others labelled it “disrespectful”, “disgraceful” and “distressing”.
