Commuter chaos as police incident sees armed officers swarm Melbourne station
A police incident at a Melbourne city train station that caused chaos for morning commuters, has been cleared.
Photos on social media showed armed police officers storming Flagstaff Station amid reports of a man armed with a firearm.
“Due to a police request in the city loop, all trains will run direct to/from Flinders Street until further notice,” Metro Trains tweeted.
Victoria Police told Yahoo News that all passengers had been moved away from the area after reports of a man carrying a firearm bag.
“Police evacuated the train and Flagstaff Station about 830am. The area was searched and has now been cleared by police,” the spokesperson said.
“Police will continue to investigate the incident, however at this time there is no ongoing threat to the community.”
Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said the CIRT team were called in after passengers spotted a rifle case, but it’s since been confirmed there was no firearm.
“The team conducted a search of the train and were after that content that there was no firearm on the train,” CCP Ashton told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell.
Metro Trains tweeted out a short time later to say that all trains had since resumed, while passengers are being urged to use trams to avoid congestion.
