Grisly details emerge after police find human remains in outback town

Human remains have been uncovered in a grim discovery in the Northern Territory.

Police were called to an area, about 15 kilometres north of Katherine, on Tuesday afternoon after receiving information from a member of the public.

They told officers that they’d found what appeared to be a human skull.

Northern Territory Police have since declared a crime scene and launched an investigation.

They’re calling on anyone with any knowledge of this person's death to contact police on 131 444.

Second gruesome find in a week

The discovery comes less than a week after skeletal remains were found outside Darwin, near a popular Top End beach.

A tourist was hiking with his dog on Wednesday September 30 when he stumbled upon human bones in thick bush near the carpark for Lee Point Beach, about 20 kilometres north of the CBD.

Over the course of the next few days, a large number of bones including a skull were uncovered as specialists, medical experts and forensic pathologists “painstakingly” combed the scene.

“There have been multiple bones and bone fragments recovered,” Detective Acting Superintendent Karl Day said on Friday.

“Probably enough to indicate one entire body.”

“They will be subject to ongoing forensic testing and analysis in order to time-stamp it and hopefully work towards identification.”

While he added that there was no indication of trauma to the bones, he warned that it could take months to identify the person.

Cold case and missing persons units, along with the major crime squad, are assisting.

“We [also] have archaeological experts working with us and at this stage they haven’t indicated it is a traditional burial site but those options remain open.

“Everything remains a criminal investigation until proven otherwise,” Det Supt Day said.

“It is way too early, at this stage, to say one way or another how this person died.”
