Dozens of young offenders have been arrested during a five-day police blitz targeting violent crime in Melbourne's outer suburbs.

Police said they "saturated" high volume crime areas in Wyndham, Brimbank, Hoppers Crossing and Melton last Tuesday to Saturday, arresting 46 people including several connected to youth street gangs.

In one incident police found three large machetes inside several cars in Hoppers Crossing.

Several burglaries and robberies were foiled, with some charged over weapons offences.

"We know operations such as these significantly improve community safety, with no serious and violent offences or car thefts being committed in these areas across the last four nights of the operation," North West Metro Superintendent David Jones said.
