A man has been killed by a polar bear on Svalbard, part of a Norwegian archipelago, according to authorities.
The attack happened around 4am local time on Friday at a campsite near the town of Longyearbyen, authorities said.
The identity of the victim has not been established.
The polar bear was shot at, but had disappeared when police arrived. The bear was later found dead on the parking lot of an airfield.
Polar bears have approached settlements more often in recent days. Usually they are chased out or shot down by helicopters.
The inhabitants of Longyearbyen were asked not to leave the settlement unarmed.
