A homemade pipe bomb has exploded in the hands of a man on the Gold Coast.

The man, 56, found the device on Olsen Avenue on Thursday about 10am.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman told Yahoo News Australia the device then exploded on Edmund Rice Drive in front of a church about 500 metres away.

It was secured after 20 minutes but caused the lockdown of a school and an aged care facility.

The man had found the homemade explosive device in the carpark of a Bunnings Warehouse store nearby and believed it to be a toolbox. He picked it up and carried it away while walking his dogs, Nine News reported.
