Picking lilies led to naked body discovery

Jane Rimmer is alleged to have been the second murder victim of Bradley Edwards

A mother and her young family had stopped on the side of a semi-rural road to pick arum lilies, also known as death lilies, when she made the grim discovery of the body of 23-year-old Jane Rimmer.

The blonde childcare worker was last seen alive outside the Continental Hotel in the salubrious Perth suburb of Claremont during a long weekend on June 9, 1996.

Ms Rimmer suffered a "prominent defect" around her neck and her naked body was found concealed by branches some two months later on August 3 in Wellard, about 40km south of the CBD.

She is alleged to be the second murder victim of accused Claremont serial killer Bradley Robert Edwards, who was arrested in December 2016 and will face an estimated six-month trial starting on Monday.

Ms Rimmer had begun her evening with friends at the Ocean Beach Hotel in Cottesloe, then moved briefly to the Continental Hotel.

She declined a lift home with friends shortly before midnight and in CCTV footage - publicly released more than a decade later - is seen smiling widely at a man she appears to know and they have a conversation.

When the camera later returns to Ms Rimmer's spot, she is gone.

Prosecutor Carmel Barbagallo told a preliminary court hearing that two witnesses living near Woolcoot Road in Wellard heard a "loud, high-pitched female scream, which stopped abruptly and was followed by silence".

After Ms Rimmer failed to attend a family lunch and work, her parents Jenny and Trevor knew something was wrong.

A knife matching those issued to Telstra workers, including Edwards, was found on Woolcoot Road but no Telstra work had been done in that area at the time.

Ms Barbagallo said fibres allegedly found in Ms Rimmer's hair matched the make and model of a car Edwards had access to at the time, as well as Telstra work trousers.

Ms Rimmer's clothes and personal belongings, except her watch, have never been found.

Her father died from cancer in 2008.

Ms Rimmer's sister Lee has attended some of Edwards' preliminary court hearings.
