Petition calls for UK to declare war on Jacinda Ardern's New Zealand

A British resident, unhappy with the government’s handling of the coronavirus, has come up with a strategy to have New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern take the reins in the UK.

The petition was called “Declare war on New Zealand and immediately surrender”, and the concept behind declaring war was so Jacinda Ardern could lead the UK too, thanks to international law.

The motivation for the petition stemmed from the instigator’s perception of the British government as incompetent.

"Under international law if you defeat a country in a war you become the de facto government of that country until new arrangements are made,” the petition said according to The New Zealand Herald.

“Therefore if the UK declares war on New Zealand and then immediately surrenders ,Jacinda Ardern and her Government will have to take over running the UK and will do a much better job that the present bunch of clowns.”

The petition has since been taken down from change.org.

UK nears 300,000 coronavirus cases

In the UK there are just under 300,000 confirmed cases of the virus, while New Zealand has none and has seemingly eliminated COVID-19.

Monday marked New Zealand’s 24th straight day without unearthing a new case of the virus. The country has had just 1504 people infected by COVID-19 and 22 people in New Zealand have died.

The petition said the British Government was “completely incapable” of controlling the virus, while New Zealand “carefully controlled the outbreak”.

Why go to war and surrender immediately? The petition explains by doing this Ms Ardern would be in-control of the UK.

"Under international law if you defeat a country in a war you become the de facto government of that country until new arrangements are made,” the petition says according to The New Zealand Herald.

“Therefore if the UK declares war on New Zealand and then immediately surrenders Jacinda Ardern and her Government will have to take over running the UK and will do a much better job that the present bunch of clowns.

"I am sure they will treat us well in defeat and sort out a few other things while they are at it."

While the petition was taken down, on social media people seemed to embrace the idea of having Ms Ardern as their leader, while others thought the idea was “crazy”.

“So... if 2020 wasn't crazy enough, there is a petition going around that says that New Zealand and UK should go to war so Jacinda Ardern can govern the COVID-19 outbreak in the UK,” one person tweeted.

While another offered another approach for the UK – voting for the ‘Jacinda’s’ of the UK.

“Surely there are one or two talented young women there?”

Ms Ardern has been recognised for her leadership around the world.

Before New Zealand’s lockdown, Ms Ardern took to Facebook Live from her bed and addressed the nation in her casual attire about the lockdown.

“Please come and look after Australia! We need Jacinda as a leader here. It’s so wonderful to see such a proactive leader. Well done,” one person wrote on the post at the time.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic, Australians were calling upon Ms Ardern to lead Australia.

After Australia’s Scott Morrison was heckled by a community which was ravaged by bushfires, some people called on Ms Ardern to “invade” Australia.

“Can you please invade Australia? I for one would welcome our New Zealand overlords. Please send leadership,” one person wrote in a reply to Ms Ardern’s Instagram post about the Australian bushfires.
