How a Perth student became trapped between a train and the platform

A student became trapped between a train carriage and the platform in Perth peak hour on Tuesday morning after politely stepping aside for commuters to exit the train.

The frightening incident unfolded at Perth’s Stirling station, when 21-year-old TAFE student Ish slipped through the small crack while executing his gentlemanly gesture.

“The train was full and I was just making way for the people who were stepping out,” Ish said.

Trains were brought to a standstill following the accident, with Public Transport Authority (PTA) officers eventually having to dismantle part of the train to set him free.

“I was frightened and didn’t know what was happening,” Ish said.

Ish was treated in hospital and luckily escaped with some minor scratches.

“It looks as if he may have just stepped backward and slipped off the back of that step,” the PTA’s David Hynes said.

The incident was the second of its kind to occur at the Stirling station, with another man becoming stuck while stepping onto the train.

Following the 2014 mishap, the PTA decreased the gap to lower the risk of people falling through.

“It’s a pure coincidence that it was Stirling,” Mr Hynes said.

Ish was surprised his work boot was still able to fit through the gap, allowing him to fall and become stuck.
