Shop owner's brutally honest sign becomes 'Straya Day' hit

A West Australian store has become an online hit after an owner apparently posted an honest but hilarious reason for the store’s amended trading hours over the Australia Day long weekend.

The sign on the unknown store wished customers a ‘Happy Australia Day’ and included an explanation about the store being closed due to the owner’s “alcohol dependancy and stress of the past month”.

The image was posted to Perth Facebook page The Bell Tower Times along with the caption: “Honesty.”

The post received more than 2200 reactions and attracted more than 220 comments from Facebook users reacting to the sign.

“Respect,” one person responded.

Some were inspired by the blunt notice.

“I’m putting this sign on my work desk for the whole of next week,” one person said.

Another person felt it was appropriate timing.

“Can’t get more Aussie than that,” they wrote.

Others applauded the owner for the honesty.

“It's not always about other people, sometimes you just have to do you,” a social media user said.

“And that's how you tell them, coz the truth is the truth. Don't you just love a bit of honesty? Straya Day,” one person responded.

Some were a little concerned for the store owner but they assured customers they didn’t need to worry.

“I am in a really good place right now, not emotionally or spiritually. Just on the couch with my dogs and wine,” the note ended.
