A man walking along a footpath has died after being struck by a car in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called following reports a car had mounted a footpath and struck a pedestrian on Dalton Rd in Epping about 10am on Saturday.

Victoria Police confirmed the man – who is yet to be formally identified – died at the scene.

After the man was struck, the male driver then continued along the footpath, before crashing into a pole and a building.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the collision, with investigations ongoing.
