A disgusted dad has slammed Woolworths after bakers allegedly ruined his son’s frog-themed birthday cake with their “pathetic” decorating skills.
Shane Hallford, 43, claims he paid $49 for a special frog-themed birthday cake from his local Woolworths store in Tamworth, New South Wales, on Sunday.
The father-of-two, who is also a policeman, ordered the cake for his son Mason’s third birthday and says the store confirmed his request for the cake three days prior to picking it up.
However, Mr Hallford and his wife Amy, 29, were horrified to discover their son’s cake looked “nothing” like they expected.
“I went down to the store three days before my son’s birthday to order the cake. I explained to them we wanted a frog theme, as my son loves frogs,” Mr Hallford wrote on Facebook.
“They told me it could done, no worries at all.
“He wrote down everything I said and said it would be ready by Sunday morning. I was very excited to see it.”
Mr Hallford says he collected the cake on the morning of the party, but when he checked the box at home he was “mortified” by the result.
“They had this tiny little number three, along with a smiley face, all written in green icing. It would have taken five seconds to do.”
“I decided to just ring Woolworths to see if they could fix it. I explained the situation but was told that they didn’t ‘decorate’ cakes,” he wrote on Facebook.
Mr Hallford said the family enlisted a cake decorator who “saved” his son’s birthday cake just 20 minutes before the guests arrived.
“I was most disappointed with just the lack of effort. It seemed like they didn’t even care,” Mr Hallford said.
“It was a disgrace. I will never be buying cakes from Woolworths again.”
The post has since gone viral, racking up thousands of likes and shares on social media.
In spite of the furore, Mr Hallford said his son still had a great birthday party and enjoyed eating the “repaired” version of the cake.
“The Tamworth store doesn’t usually offer a full cake decoration service, but is always willing to help local customers,” a Woolworths spokesperson told Yahoo7.
“The team offered to attempt the decorations requested at no extra cost.
“We’re sorry to have disappointed the customer with our cake decorating, particularly on such a special day for the family.
“We’ve been in contact with the customer to apologise and provided them with a $50 gift card.”
