Park festival marks 50th year

A crowd starts to gather as the 1963 EH Holden ute moves down Fraser Avenue, a classic Australian car set against an iconic skyline.

Pink and yellow everlastings are pushing through every rusted hole in its body and the front-loader carrying it inches forward as smoothly as possible.

It's one of two EH utes brought in from the Wheatbelt to take pride of place at tomorrow's opening day of the Kings Park Festival.

Both the festival and the EH Holden are celebrating their 50th birthday this year and festival director Rebecca Maddern thinks it's a great fit. "Each year we try to come up with a great visual hook," Ms Maddern said.

"We got in touch with the EH Holden Car Club and they put us in touch with these two guys from the Wheatbelt. It's a nice fit because it's an Aussie icon really and I think the park is as well.

"We thought it would be something for the dads and grand-dads to look at, not just the ladies."

The last weekend of the month-long festival will feature a display of about 20 EH Holdens.

Events officer Kelly Meacock has not had the chance to drive an EH in her 22 years, but she knows a classic when she sees one.

"I think (it) will be something that everybody will like, especially tourists," she said.
