The 'scary' surprise hiding in teen's back to school photo

As students are heading back to school in the United States, parents are proudly sharing photos of their children's first days on social media.

But one seventh-grader from Auburn, Alabama, had a surprise guest in her photo: a snake.

Brooke Mills, an incoming freshman at Auburn City School, stood in her yard as her mother, Shane Joy Mills, took a photo before her first day of school on Thursday.

What the mother and daughter didn't realise during their photoshoot was a large snake on the tree, directly behind Brooke, seemingly staring at her.

“Well 7th grade here she comes,” Brooke’s father shared on Facebook.

“Appears a friend wanted to go with her. Lucky for [Brooke] he looked like his belly was already full.”

Brooke’s mother called the moment “scary.”

“I got two pictures and said ‘Show your teeth please, baby!’ Then I saw the snake. I said, ‘Brooke come here’ and she looked at me like I’m not done taking pics!”

“So I said, ‘Brooke get away from the tree now.’ I said it calmly, but I’m sure my face said it all,” Mills said, according to WRBL.

While it was unknown what type of snake it was, commenters on Facebook seem to be in agreement that it was a relatively harmless rat snake.
