Parents call daughter ‘childish’ for refusing to come home unless she gets a Christmas gift
A 19-year-old thinks her parents give more to her 17-year-old sister Bree.
She asked Reddit’s “Am I the A******? (AITA)” forum to weigh in on a recent issue. She described her sister Bree as a “brat” who’s spoiled “rotten” by their parents. If Bree doesn’t get what she wants, she throws a tantrum, and her parents usually capitulate.
“I wouldn’t say she got in the way of me or our brother (23) getting anything, but it was always really obvious who got more,” the Redditor said.
This year, her parents wanted a “low-stress” Christmas, meaning no gifting. She agreed. But she became furious when she found out everyone still had to get a gift for Bree. Her parents argued that Bree is still a “baby” who lives at home, while the Reddit poster is an adult and has moved out.
“I called them back and told them that I won’t come home for Christmas unless I get a gift,” she said. “It doesn’t have to even be a fraction of what they spent on Bree, it could be literally the smallest thing, I just want one gift.”
But her parents dismissed her request as “childish.” Her roommates think she is being “immature.” However, she believes she just wants to be treated fairly.
People felt like her parents were in the wrong here.
“Don’t keep setting yourself up to get hurt because your parents obviously favor your sister,” a person wrote.
“Shes 17. Shes not a baby shes the golden child,” another said.
“They completely missed the point of your request. It’s not about you getting a gift, it’s about the unfairness of the situation,” a Redditor commented.
