A Melbourne paramedic has been injured during an alleged attack by a patient.

Two paramedics were called to a house in Epping about 12.40am on Wednesday to treat a man in his 20s who was reportedly unconscious after drinking excessively.

The man spat at the paramedics as they tried to wake him, forcing them to sedate him before he punched one of the workers in the face as they wheeled him to the ambulance in a stretcher.

The paramedic was hospitalised with back and facial injuries.
