A 55-year-old man is dead after a Tuesday morning crash at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Route 404 on Newfoundland's west coast near the community of Jeffrey's.

The RCMP says it responded to the two-vehicle crash around 6:45 a.m. NT.

Police say a westbound pickup truck and an SUV entering the highway from Route 404 collided.

"The lone occupant of the SUV, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene," the RCMP said in a news release on Wednesday.

Two people in the pickup truck were brought to the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville for treatment. One was later released and the other was treated for what the RCMP described as "serious, non-life threatening injuries."

The RCMP says the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is involved and the investigation is ongoing.
