Ohio Father Hit by Car Driven by 9-Year-Old Son Was Allegedly Drunk When Giving Driving Lesson: Police
Clejuan Marquis Williams, 36, is now facing criminal charges connected to the incident
An Ohio man was injured after allegedly drunkenly taking his young son for a driving lesson.
Clejuan Marquis Williams, 36, was allegedly “intoxicated” when he let his 9-year-old get behind the wheel on Sunday, Oct. 6, according to responding officer Nicole Tucker’s affidavit to the summons filed in Toledo Clerk of Court and reviewed by PEOPLE.
While his son was allegedly in the driver’s seat, Williams, who was “attempting to teach” him how to drive, allegedly “instructed” him “to press one of the pedals,” but the child “did not know which one that was,” and accidentally “placed the vehicle in reverse,” according to the affidavit.
The car revved backward and into a pole across the street, according to the officer, who cited multiple witnesses and a video in the affidavit.
Tucker alleged in the affidavit that the father “violated the duty of care and protection for his child by allowing him to operate a motor vehicle,” and that his “actions created a substantial risk of harm” to both the father and “the very young child standing right near the vehicle as this occurred.”
Williams is charged with one count of first-degree misdemeanor endangerment of children by creating a substantial risk to their health or safety, as well as wrongful entrustment of a vehicle to a person who does not have a valid license, according to summonses issued in the cases and obtained by PEOPLE.
Williams was taken to the hospital, and his condition has not been released, WTOL 11 reported.
Tucker noted in the affidavit signed Sunday that Williams had been “personally served with a copy of the summons due to his inability to be booked” based on injuries.
It was unclear if he had been later booked in Lucas County Corrections Center, but an online record of those incarcerated since Monday did not include him. No one else was listed as injured in the affidavit.
Neither the Toledo Police Department nor the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office responded to PEOPLE’s request for additional information on the case in time for publication.
It was not immediately clear if Williams had yet retained a lawyer. He is slated to be arraigned on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. local time.
