A package containing fake IDs ordered by a college student by the name of Dean has accidentally been delivered to the dean of the student’s college.

Police said the package, containing a small picture frame with eight driver’s licences taped in the back, arrived at the dean’s mailbox in Radnor Township last month, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The driver’s licences carried the names of four 18-year-old male students and resembled those issued in Connecticut and Maryland.

The dean contacted police and it was soon determined he had received the package, sent from China, because of a mail room mistake - his last name is similar to that of the intended recipient.

"You can't make this up," Radnor Police Superintendent William Colarulo said.

It is understood the fake IDs were purchased online.

Neither the university nor the students involved have been identified.

The students are reportedly cooperating with police and while they will not face criminal charges, they will undergo counselling and could face punishment from the school.
