A nun has shocked her convent in Italy after she gave birth to a baby boy following complaints of bad stomach pain.

The sister claimed she had no idea she was pregnant until she was rushed to hospital in agony, then giving birth soon after, the Daily Mail reports.

The nun, who had come from South America supposedly already pregnant when she joined the convent in June had been taken to hospital by her fellow sisters, but doctors soon determined the cause of the pain.

According to local reports, the baby boy was born healthy and remains in hospital to undergo more checks.

The nun’s convent has also reportedly expressed an interest in taking care of the child.
