Nurse causes 'catastrophic injury to baby during delivery'

WARNING, DISTRESSING: A nurse at an Indian hospital has reportedly accidentally pulled the head off a baby during its birth.

A pregnant woman, named as Dikhsha Kanwar, was admitted to Ramgarh Community Health Centre in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district on January 6 after her contractions began, the Hindustan Times reports.

It’s understood the baby was in the breech position when a nurse attempted to pull it out.

The Hindustan Times said the nurse had pulled “so hard while attempting to deliver the baby that it broke into two parts.”

The body separated from the head, which was still inside the mother’s womb.

It’s alleged that two nurses in the medical team took the headless body to the hospital mortuary and told a doctor they had finished Ms Kanwar’s delivery but there had been a complication delivering the placenta.

The woman was taken to the nearby Ummed Hospital in Jodphur, where shocked doctors, thinking they were delivering a placenta, instead found the baby’s head.

According to the Hindustan Times, it was only at this point that Ms Kanwar and her husband were told what had happened.

The two nurses have been suspended and an investigation is underway.
