An off-duty nurse has had her arm broken in three places after she was assaulted while trying to help an unconscious man in Sydney's inner west.

The 65-year-old registered nurse stopped to help a 24-year-old man lying on a King Street footpath in Newtown on Tuesday afternoon when another man pushed her to the ground, police say.

The 57-year-old man allegedly jumped on top of the woman and assaulted her again before members of the public intervened.

The assailant was arrested at the scene and has been charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm. He was refused bail and will appear at Central Local Court on Wednesday.
