NT fishing buddies happen upon naked fugitive

A pair of fishermen in the Northern Territory have made a bizarre catch after stumbling upon a naked alleged fugitive while out on croc-infested waters.

Cam Faust and his friend Kevin Joiner told News Corp they were putting down crab pots in a Darwin waterway when they came across a man wearing no clothes in the mangroves.

In a video captured by the fishermen, the filthy man told them he’d been surviving on snails for four days and asked for water.

“He’s lucky we found him it’s only a coincidence we put a crab pot near where he was, otherwise we wouldn’t have heard him yelling for help over the motor,” Mr Faust said.

Mr Joiner told Nine News the man looked “pretty knocked up”.

“He had scratches all over him, covered in mosquito bites, mud all over his face and chest,” he recounted.

The pair realised the man was in a bad way and sought medical help after giving him a beer and a trip back to land.

“I don’t think I’ll ever catch something like that again,” Mr Joiner joked.

Police later identified the naked man as an alleged escaped fugitive wanted over an armed robbery, Nine News reported.

The man reportedly told the fisherman he had got lost on the way to a New Year’s Eve party.

NT Northern Watch Commander Len Turner said the man remains under police guard at Royal Darwin Hospital.

He added while the man was “at large” he committed further offences but didn’t elaborate on what these were.

NT Police have been contacted for comment.
