A sleeping camper in the Northern Territory has been woken by an attacker allegedly sexually assaulting her and another woman has woken to find the same man tugging at her jeans.

The woman, 24, was camping with friends on Saturday after a sporting event at Mataranka, 420km southeast of Darwin, in the local showground when the alleged assault occurred, NT police said Monday.

The man, who was not known to the woman, fled the scene when she woke.

A second woman camping in the same area was also awoken by the man allegedly pulling at her jeans.

He left the area when the woman woke, a spokesman said.

The alleged offender is described as a young Aboriginal male who was wearing a black hoodie and long sandy-coloured pants.
