Unsafe Sydney train stations

FIRST ON 7: An alliance of community groups claims at least eight Sydney railway stations are unsafe because of a lack of night staff.

It says the stations have just one CityRail employee on duty leaving platforms unguarded, and passengers unprotected.

Community leaders, nuns, students, unionists, and even the local school principal marched on Granville.

They are arguing for more staff, and a safer railway station.

"Some parents are concerned about the amenity at the station for safety and I think that it's wonderful that you're all here today," Granville Boys High School principal Linda O'Brien said.

The protest is part of a drive for better public transport by the Sydney Alliance, an organisation of community groups, churchs and unions.

"What we bring together is the voice of the community because we believe the community needs to have a say on important issues like safety around their train station," Sydney Alliance spokeswoman Amanda Tattersal said.

The Alliance says Granville has just one staff member working at night, and that person is locked away from vulnerable passengers.

They want two staff members on all key stations until the last train leaves.

Granville isn't alone, the alliance says it's one of eight major interchange stations that need urgent attention to make passengers feel safe.

They are Granville, Chatswood, Sydenham, Sutherland, Wolli Creek, Glenfield, Campbelltown and Penrith.

In a statement Railcorp said that more frontline staff would be deployed from July.

More police patrols are next on the Alliance's list of demands.
