Exclusive poll reveals bad news for PM

FIRST ON 7: A 7News-ReachTel poll of Western Sydney residents has revealed who they want to lead Australia.

It's not good news for the Prime Minister, as she made a billion dollar pledge to win back votes, during a five-day blitz of crucial electorates.

Try as she might, the exclusive poll shows the Julia Gillard is still a long way behind as preferred leader.

Today she promised a billion dollars plus for the WestConnex project, linking the two main western motorways.

And she warned that if the polls are right, and this area alone elects a Tony Abbott-led government, that taxes will rise and welfare payments will fall.

"It means that families can lose up to $2,300 a year because of Mr Abbott's plans," the Prime Minister said.

Attacks hammered in a furious round of media interviews this morning, as Ms Gillard saturated the airwaves at a training run for the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The Wanderers are the big success story of Western Sydney, and for Julia Gillard she's hoping some of it rubs off on her.

And she'll need it to, according to a 7News-ReachTEL poll of eleven Western Sydney electorates which found of the four most popular choices for preferred Prime Minister were;

39% for Tony Abbott
26% for Kevin Rudd
22% for Malcolm Turnbull
13% for Julia Gillard

When put head to head, 75 per cent of voters in this election battleground preferred Kevin Rudd as Labor Leader over Julia Gillard.
