Sixteen-year-old girl attacked with a knife at suburban bus stop

A teenage girl has faced court after she allegedly held a kitchen knife to the throat of a 16-year-old in Sydney's west.

Kylie Balawagaga appeared in Bankstown Court accused of approaching the school girl at a bus stop opposite Bass Hill police station armed with a kitchen knife on Tuesday.

Bankstown Police Acting Superintendent Bradley Thorne said the 18-year-old held a knife to the teenager's throat.

Balawagaga allegedly stole the girl's phone and dragged her inside the police station with the knife still at her throat. She was then talked down by a police officer.

Outside of court, the 18-year-old's lawyer Deone Provera described the matter as "sad".

In court, he said his client has "really serious mental health problems".

"She's a very troubled woman," Mr Provera told the court.

"She's asked me not to apply for bail."

The 16-year-old can't be identified due to legal reasons but her parents say she is still shaken by what happened. It's understood she's taken the week off school because of the incident.
