Sydney waitress fired after saying 'Taiwan isn't part of China'

A Sydney restaurant has been accused of sacking a worker who told her boss she didn’t believe Taiwan was part of China.

The Taiwanese worker, known only as "Winnie", had been working a night shift at the unnamed restaurant in Sydney’s inner-west when she was called over by her boss.

“At that time, the restaurant was not very busy, the boss called me via walkie talkie,” she wrote, according to News Corp.

It was at that point, the worker alleges, her boss asked: “Does Taiwan belong to China?”

“Definitely not,” she replied.

Within 20 minutes of her response, she said she was told to go home and not come back the following day.

“Personally speaking, I hold a neutral position on the relationship between China and Taiwan,” Winnie wrote.

Social media users responded in shock, urging the banished employee to take legal action against her former employer.

Her sacking comes as animosity between China and the neighbouring island of Taiwan continues to fester.

China's aviation authority on Friday demanded an apology from US carrier Delta Airlines for listing Taiwan and Tibet as countries on its website.

Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue. The ruling Communist Party considers the self-ruled, democratic island a wayward province and refuses to renounce the threat of force to bring it into the fold.
